This paper formalizes the Red Duck Paradigm, a newly observable failure mode in contemporary human–AI knowledge ecosystems whereby fictional or illustrative artifacts acquire the posture of factual truth through repetition, documentary aesthetics, and epistemic inheritance. Unlike traditional misinformation or deliberate disinformation, Red Duck phenomena often arise without malicious intent. Instead, they propagate through well‑meaning systems optimized for plausibility, fluency, and engagement rather than provenance and empirical grounding. This paper defines the paradigm, identifies its operative mechanisms, demonstrates it through a live case study involving AI‑generated agricultural imagery, and argues that managing ontological drift must become a first‑order design concern for generative systems. The idea of the paradigm was first postulated by the author in the autumn of 2024.

Generative artificial intelligence has dramatically lowered the cost and friction associated with producing high‑fidelity images, video, audio, and narrative artifacts. These outputs are increasingly indistinguishable — at least perceptually — from documentary or evidentiary media. While this shift has enabled new creative and educational affordances, it has also introduced a structural epistemic risk: the decoupling of representational realism from referential truth.
This paper introduces and formalizes the Red Duck Paradigm, an emergent failure mode observed during AI‑mediated reasoning in which illustrative or fictional content transitions into accepted fact — not through deception, but through systemic reinforcement.
